BPOM Strenghten Supervision & Enforcement

The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) will strenghten the entire line of prevention and prosecution of illegal drugs and food trafficking which in 2016 reached Rp 120 billion.

The Head of BPOM, Penny Kusumastuti Lukito said that her institution will rely on their partnership with related agencies, ministries, and institutions to suppress the number of drugs and food distribution that does not have distribution permit from BPOM.

According to him, the demographic bonus requires the consumption of drugs and food that are safe because the challenge ahead is to improve the pharmaceutical industry competitiveness that reach about 5,300 companies. Around 85% of it are micro scale companies.

"As much as 90% of food sector are also micro indutries. BPOM requires partnership [to oversee the illegal goods distribution],' said Penny on Tuesday (28/2). Therefore, she said this year BPOM will also create a new deputy.

The new agency is Vigilance and Enforcement Deputy which will specially taking care of the strengthening of BPOM duties in the field of law enforcement and criminal offenses of illegal drugs and food circulation.

Some ministries and agencies will cooperate with BPOM. Some of them are the Attorney General who will provide assistance on investigation and coordination about food and drugs criminal offense case handling.

BPOM has also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Home Affairs in term of cooperation on the use of national identification number, demographic data, dan e-ID cards within the scope of BPOM task.

To prevent the circulation of illegal drugs and food, BPOM made a joint cooperation with Indonesia Market Management Association (Asparindo) to oversee and conduct training related to the circulation of traditional medicine, cosmetics, health supplements, and safe food in the markets.

"So there will be counseling about the right way to store and distribute drug products. Preventing from distributing it to the illegal parties".
